Digital Escape Rooms? There Are Better Alternatives

It’s a difficult task to find something new to do in the quarantine. We had months to explore every part of our already existing hobbies – that is, if they’re doable from home. While escape room enthusiasts have had it rough in the first couple of weeks of COVID, owners were quick to come up with something new – with something even better than digital escape rooms. Let’s take a look at our options

Digital Escape Rooms? There Are Better Alternatives

Escape Room Video Games

Escape rooms got to where they are now thanks to video games. So why not take a walk down memory lane and see where it all started? Get back to the roots and give a try to The Room – not only is it available on PC, but you can also play it on your phone. While the Portal games are not necessarily escape room themed, we still think it’s a great recommendation in a similar genre. But let’s be real, one of the most important aspects of escape rooms is playing them in a team, so let’s cover that too.

Escape Room Board Games

You just can’t go wrong with the classics - board games are typically geared towards players competing against each other. However, in the last few years, cooperative board games have also become more widespread, with an emphasis on collaboration. It's enough to think of the now painfully current Pandemic. Escape room board games are similar, but one big problem with them is that (similarly to escape rooms) their replayability is basically non-existent.

Digital Escape Rooms

Responsible escape room operators could do nothing in March but close down their business (hopefully only temporarily). Those with more resources and imagination tried different digital transitions and that’s how this genre was born. Due to the great haste, unfortunately, these games mostly do not reach the standard of escape room video games. In addition, they do not offer a community experience either, and that might be what everyone misses the most these days.

Online Escape Room - Remote Escape Room

While digital escape rooms tried to revive the past, online (or remote) escape rooms might be the future of the industry. Players can basically explore real-life escape rooms through the camera of an on-site game master.

This is accompanied by a digital environment where players can communicate continuously with each other and with the game master via video chat. This way, everyone can play safely, even from a distance, and the special, unique atmosphere of escape rooms is maintained during the adventure.
